They develop stronger alloys to enable use of light weight components.  They design composites when no single material is adequate.  They discover innovative processes to exploit materials resources in more efficient and sustainable ways.  They are knowledgeable in materials selection that enables them to find substitutes for expensive or hazardous commodities or materials in short supply.  Materials engineers are problem solvers.  When something breaks, materials specialists in failure analysis are called in to determine the cause and to propose a remedy.  They work in all kinds of industries that involve all types of materials.  They understand atomic order of crystals, microstructure of grains, the nature of defects, and their cumulative effect on materials properties.
